Just dropped a @substack article about my firsthand experience as a former Southern Baptist woman pastor ahead of the #SBC convention in Indianapolis in 2 weeks where the #Lawamendment will be voted on for the second time after last year men spoke hysterically and red-faced on both sides of the debate about whether women can be pastors in the SBC. Notably missing were the women pastors at @Saddleback who weren't speaking for themselves. In a denomination steeped in #Christianpatriarchy otherwise labeled as hierarchical #complimentarianism, men still speak for women. My experience of working for Andy Wood, as a woman he recruited from Singapore to move to Silicon Valley and be the 2nd woman pastor at @echochurchlive, was one of workplace #bullying, intimidation, #coercivecontrol, #gaslighting, false narratives to discredit me as a #whistleblower, being disinvited (read: excommunicated) from my church, being disinvited to the staff meeting where I was framed as an evil spiritual force trying to bring a good man down, and where the entire staff was told I had gained weight. So, for those who see @Saddleback church's lead pastor as a champion for women, I urge you to look at the nuance. He wasn't even at the SBC last year to defend his church from being kicked out of the SBC. The women pastors of Saddleback weren't given a mic to speak for themselves. This battle is about men, by men, and women's voices aren't valued. It's designed for you not to see it. I urge you to look for the nuance, and pull back the curtain behind the flashy, glitzy megachurch stage to see what really happened with this "hero for women pastors," behind the curtain. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking rest is something we have to earn. However, the truth is, rest is a necessity, not a luxury. Just as we need to breathe, our bodies and brains need rest to function properly. Embracing this truth is key to building resilience. Workplaces that recognize the human need for rest give their employees what they truly need. We should work from a wellspring of rest, rather than working to earn rest. Just as the sun sets and the ocean tide ebbs and flows, human bodies are designed to work and rest. This is the normal, natural rhythm of being human and staying connected to our needs. Leaders, bosses, and supervisors, how you model and facilitate rest in your workplace will cultivate the resilience you and your team need to flourish. By acknowledging and supporting the need for rest, you’re not just enhancing well-being; you’re fostering a culture where innovation and productivity can thrive. 🌅 Resilience Reminder ☀️ Watching this sunset in Maui brought a profound calm and peace to my body and soul. Working hard in a Silicon Valley tech company and as a podcast host means my life is often hectic. It demands resilience and the ability to balance intense work with intentional rest. For me, this balance includes spending time in nature on weekends and taking evening walks around my neighborhood. Sometimes, it means more—a trip to Hawaii, where I can pause and absorb the golden rays of a sunset. This serene moment was a powerful and beautiful reminder to rest. Each day is a new day, and our bodies need these reminders that we are human. Rest is a need, not a luxury. It’s as essential as breathing and shouldn’t have to be earned. Instead, it should be practiced regularly to build the resilience needed to make the impact we aspire to achieve. A sunset by the ebb and flow of ocean waves is a vivid reminder of what comes and goes. The sun is a constant, and even the sun sets, giving half of the planet a chance to rest each day. In moments of stress or difficulty, finding solace in a happy place can be incredibly powerful. For me, that place is a warm, tropical beach. 🌴✨ Visualizing this serene environment helps me tap into the sensory experiences that bring me joy and peace. I can feel the soft, warm sand between my toes and the gentle caress of the tropical sun on my skin. The crystal clear water refreshes and cleanses, while the cool breeze blows my hair off my face, bringing with it the soothing scent of saltwater and the sweet aroma of coconut ice cream. I can almost hear the ice cream seller’s cheerful voice calling out, “Helado de coco en la concha,” as he entices us to buy coconut ice cream in a coconut shell. 🥥 🌴 Being at any beach always reminds me of my favorite beach, and brings up all my happy childhood memories of going to Playuelita in Morrocoy, Venezuela. 🇻🇪 However, I don’t have to physically be at a beach to recall the joy memory of being there. By vividly recalling these details, my body remembers the calm and happiness I feel when I’m physically there. Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, Freida Adams, a mom who nurtures, guides, cares for & inspires so many besides just me and my 2 brothers. She has lived a life that would make the ancestors we just traced together in England, Scotland and Wales so proud. She lost her Dad at age 5, and that marked her in ways that she knows the fragility and sacredness of life. She cares for asylum seekers in New Mexico and has cared for immigrants in Venezuela by starting a free clinic in the ‘80’s that still is going today. She has treated wounds both physical and emotional in Northern Thailand, and as grandmother to my own child who was recently in an ATV accident. Her love is fierce, and she uses not only her nursing skills and subject matter expertise on infectious diseases to help many, she worked for years representing the state of New Mexico internationally in border health, taking her to DC, Mexico City and into international meetings to ensure health care and prevention for citizens of many nations. To know my mom is to know she cares- deeply and practically. Getting to take her to the UK last month to do some sightseeing together on the bookends of my business trip was the absolute best mother-daughter trip. We saw: 🏰 castles (including one in Scotland where our ancestor was born) 🎶watched the musical @sixthemusical in London 🚇 rode double decker buses & the tube 🚸@abbeyroadstudios where my Beatles fan mom got to walk the Abbey Road crosswalk. Mom is a talented pianist who received a full scholarship to Vanderbilt, but wanted to pursue a medical career instead. Music has always played a big role in her life and in our family. I am blessed with a mom who loves me, inspires me, and cares for me, my husband and our kids so well. I’m grateful for my friend @shannancoplandmusic who released a song for Mother’s Day as a mom of 2 girls herself & who lost her own beloved mother not long ago. It’s a reminder of how cherishing our moms and being moms can be a closeness like nothing else. 🏰✨ Walking down the historic Royal Mile in Edinburgh is like strolling through the pages of a captivating storybook, each cobblestone whispering tales of bygone eras. Starting from the majestic Edinburgh Castle, perched atop its volcanic rock, the journey unfolds with every step towards the iconic St. Giles Church. As I sauntered along this ancient thoroughfare with my mom, I couldn’t help but reflect on the remarkable history intertwined with every stone. From the echoes of John Knox’s sermons, to the turbulent times of a nuanced view of the reign of Queen Mary of Scots and her 10 month old baby King James VI, whose coronation was graced by Knox’s words in Stirling. Incidentally, John Knox preached against Queen Mary of Scots, and considering there, amidst the hustle and bustle, lies the unassuming parking spot 23, where the great reformer John Knox finds his final resting place, I wondered how related it all was. We saw two bagpipe players in kilts, including a little boy playing “ Amazing Grace.” We stopped at the David Hume statue, complete with an orange traffic cone on his head. It’s a whole thing. Capturing a moment at Advocate’s Close, I couldn’t resist indulging in the flavors of Scotland, savoring every bite of its delicious cuisine. What better way to culminate such an enriching day than with a leisurely afternoon tea at The Scotsman, enveloped in the elegance of tradition and charm. Sunday blessed us with glorious weather, a perfect backdrop to immerse oneself in the rich tapestry of Edinburgh’s past. Each corner turned, each story discovered, a testament to the enduring allure of this enchanting city. 🏰 Yesterday, my mom and I embarked on a poignant journey through Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, where the weight of history enveloped us. The echoes of darkness and suffering, borne from the abuse of power by both government and church, reverberated through the stone walls, reminding us of the perils of unchecked authority. 🏴 As we traversed the corridors of the castle, the tragic tale of Queen Mary of Scots unfolded before us. In a “wee” room within these ancient walls, she gave birth to a king, only to be cruelly separated from him, imprisoned and denied the chance to witness his coronation at a mere 10 months old. Over afternoon tea and amidst the cobblestone streets, my mom and I discussed these historical narratives, grappling with their relevance in our modern world. We paused to pay homage at the Witches Well, a somber tribute to the thousands unjustly persecuted during Scotland’s dark chapter of witch hunts. 🕯️ Yet, as we reflected on these tales of oppression and injustice, we couldn’t help but draw parallels to our own time. The burning of witches may have evolved into subtler forms of persecution, manifesting in social media witch hunts or the silencing of dissent within institutional settings. 🏴✨ Last weekend was an enchanting journey through the heart of Wales with my dear mom! 🚗💨 From the lush green hills to the majestic ocean, every mile felt like a step closer to our ancestral roots. 🌿🌊 Tracing the path of our ancestor who embarked on a historic journey to Pennsylvania in the 1600s filled us with awe and wonder. Driving through South Wales, we couldn’t help but marvel at the same landscapes our forebears once called home. 🏞️ Exploring the quaint towns they lived in, imagining their daily lives against the backdrop of picturesque Welsh scenery, was truly moving. 🏰⛵ One of the highlights was Llandudno beach and pier, where we were greeted by breathtaking cliffs and the majestic views of the cliffs towering against the shore. 🌅💕 It was a moment of pure serenity, a connection to the land and its history. 🌿 Last weekend’s road trip through Wales was nothing short of magical. 🏰 From exploring ancient castles steeped in history to strolling through world-famous gardens, every moment was like stepping into a storybook. 🏴 As we drove through the picturesque countryside, the sight of cute baby sheep grazing on lush green pastures and hillsides painted a scene straight out of a postcard. But amidst the beauty, there was a profound sense of wonder. 💭 We couldn’t help but imagine what life was like for our Welsh ancestors during the times of empire and medieval splendor. How did they navigate through these castles, each with its own tale of triumphs and struggles? Taking moments to pause, we found ourselves immersed in the tranquility of castle gardens, sipping tea, indulging in scones, and watching peacocks gracefully roam.
